A Sense of Community
Imagining a world with tolerance and understanding equality and peace, without divisions based on race, religion or politics. I was inspired by a positive response to the negative trends in today's world. My work depicts a vision of imaginary, idealistic futuristic communities, by representing how life could be with a focus on acceptance, skills and knowledge.
As we grow, we wade through the underbrush of life. We follow society's protocols and rules, often traveling those tumultuous roads, which may, for some, seem like a journey through hell. Eventually arriving at a time and place where we gather strength, utilize the knowledge and skills we've gained, and realize the importance of learning from others in our communities - their traditions, and cultures. All of this enables us to become unique individuals.
My paintings attempt to depict this struggle, the choice, and the ultimate victory. As a "people" we all strive for the same basic things in life - live in peace, prosper, and be accepted for who we are.
I’m my imagined worlds; knowledge is gained from "Pillars" in the community. They are stable and structured, and are a solid foundation of support. They have the answers for anyone wishing to ask the questions. The Pillars are elders, and those who carry the knowledge of the community.
Motivated by the diversity of cultures and traditions that I have experienced, a "Sense of Community" depicts what life could be. People free to share thoughts, debate issues, while being respectful of each other. People may choose to continue to live their lives in one community, or move to another. It matters not which community, or how long they are there, reasons for staying, or leaving, lessons will be learned, life will continue.
Upon visiting these futuristic Communities, it is my hope that the viewer will become part of the process, building on the values and advantages of a world of equality where peace triumphs.
